How I Overcame Procrastination

Sunday, 2 June 2024·2 min read· Mindset

Do you procrastinate? I used to, a lot! Until I decided not to.

But first, what is procrastination? "The act of delaying or postponing tasks, often leading to stress and reduced productivity."

Let me give you an example. There is a lot happening in my life at this moment — which is why I missed the newsletter last week. I am tired today too, but it stresses me out not to write this today and miss another week.

Forget about this week, I came up with the idea of this newsletter in December 2022, and the first newsletter went out in January 2024 🙃 I had one excuse — "I don't have time."

The Root Cause: Why Did I Procrastinate? Fear of Failure. Perfectionism. Lack of Motivation. Poor Time Management.

Basically, I did not have a strong "why" for writing. However, that's because I was looking at this in $$$ terms. Not all costs are paid in dollars 🤷‍♂️

I was so stressed about not starting the newsletter for an entire year that it started impacting my productivity in other areas. And then I read Alex Hormozi's 100M Leads. His "why" for writing was a lot bigger — he wants his books to outlive him and be relevant even 200 years from today!! 😳

So it's not the lack of time or "not enough $$ return" that's stopping us from doing things that are important, it's the lack of a strong "why."

And my "why" is clear — I am passionate about writing more than making videos. It's also a vent for me to share my personal stories with an audience that genuinely wants to learn.

This is true for a lot of things in life. I procrastinated about working out from 2020 until 2023! I gained 15 kg in the meantime. "I don't have the time" was my biggest excuse.

But then I asked myself: Who am I working so hard for? To have a better life, right? But what if I don't live long enough to live my best life?

If I know something is important enough to stress me out, I don't look for excuses but rather look for a stronger "why" 👀
