The Month I Barely Worked

Sunday, 30 August 2026·3 min read· Business Money

One month after Arian (my son) was born, I had one of the best months my business has ever had.

I want you to picture what that month actually looked like.

I was barely at my desk. I was running on broken sleep, doing night feeds, learning how to hold a human being who weighed almost nothing. Simran and I were somewhere between exhausted and amazed, most days both at once.

And the money came in anyway.

If you had looked at my life that month from the outside, you would have called it passive income. 💰

A guy at home with his newborn, business running, money landing.

It wasn't passive. Not even close.

That month was paid for 4 years earlier.

It was built by a version of me who worked 18 to 20 hours a day, 365 days a year, for 4 straight years. No weekends that felt like weekends. No holidays that felt like holidays. Just relentless, unglamorous, repetitive work that nobody saw and nobody clapped for. 😮‍💨

The money didn't show up because I finally cracked some code.

It showed up because the work I did years ago finally caught up to me.

That's the part nobody explains.

I get asked about passive income constantly. How do I make money while working less? What can I set up that runs on its own? What's the thing I can build once and never touch again?

I understand the question. I asked it too.

But here's what I've come to believe.

There is no passive income. There's only front-loaded income. 🧱

The work doesn't disappear. It just moves. You either do it while you're getting paid, or you do it years before you get paid, with no guarantee that anything is coming.

And the second one is Much Harder.

Because at least a job pays you on Friday. Front-loading means working through the years where nothing is landing, where nobody sees it, where you cannot prove to anyone - including yourself - that it will ever be worth it.

You see this with stock traders too. Someone posts their account, calls it passive, and it looks like money appearing while they sleep.

But behind that screen are years of study, blown accounts, losses that hurt, and thousands of hours learning to read something most people never learn to read. The work happened. You just weren't there for it.

Now let me be honest about myself. I don't have real passive income.

If I stopped working for 6 months, a lot of it would quietly disappear. Semi-passive is the most honest word for it. The business still needs me, and pretending otherwise would be a lie that makes me look better than I am. 📈

So when someone asks me how to make money without working, I don't have an answer for them.

But I do have one for the other question - the real one underneath it.

You're not actually asking how to avoid work. You're asking how to stop trading every single hour of your life for money.

That's a fair thing to want. It's what I wanted too.

The answer isn't finding work that doesn't feel like work. It's choosing work that keeps paying you after you've done it. 🧭

That's the only real difference. Some work pays you once. Some work pays you for years.

Both of them cost you the same thing upfront.

Nobody escapes the work. Some of us just do it earlier, before anyone is paying attention, so that one day the money can arrive while we're holding our kids. 🤍

P.S. Hit reply and tell me honestly: what's something you've worked at where the payoff came much later than you expected - or hasn't come yet? I read every reply. Half of what I write comes from what you send me.
