My first video and HATE

Sunday, 31 March 2024·2 min read· Business Mindset

When we first started on YouTube, some people pointed out that my wife Simran's curly hair looked bad and said she should comb her hair properly. "You look like Simran's father." "You should cut your hair because you look terrible." "The two of you should get divorced because you don't seem happy." "You don't have kids... are you guys even capable of having them?"

It's our 5th year on social media, and the hate continues! Several people want us to fail, go bankrupt. Many think that the only reason we are successful is that we have rich parents.

One person even said, "I wish you die tomorrow."

At first, it used to hurt us, make us angry. But I realized that you can't talk sense into these people because you just can't change their years of conditioning with ONE comment. Imagine, the person has taken the time to watch the video and then post a hateful comment with the intention to hurt me — there must be something very wrong happening in this person's life, don't you think?

What I also realized was that once I fell into the rabbit hole of being impacted by hate comments, I started to seek them out and ignore all the positive ones. What about the 10 good comments for every bad one?

Why am I talking about this today? Because that's the number one reason that stops people from building their personal brand on social media — the fear of being judged, being hated on.

When people ask me, "Nav, I want to make videos. But I don't know where to start?" — 100% of the time, what they are really asking is, "how do I get over the fear of being judged?"

It's not about the right equipment. It's not about the subject knowledge. It's not about the right editing tool. It's about "what if I get judged?"

It takes me 10 hours of research, 1 hour of shooting, and 5 hours of editing to get a video out every week. Should I really be taking crap from someone who has done nothing remotely close to what I am doing?

There are only two things you need to make your first video:

1. Shed your insecurity. Your video is not about how you look or how you speak; it's about the value you bring to the world.
2. Stop caring about "what other people will think about you" — because you should not care about the opinions of people who are not doing what you are.

Pick up the camera, shoot, edit, and post. That's the only way to get over your fear.
