Being Rich Is A Trap

Sunday, 14 June 2026·3 min read· Money

Mike Tyson made the kind of money most people can’t even imagine. At his peak, he was worth ~$400M. Generated his largest single-fight payday of $103 million in 2002.

He had Mansions. Cars. Staff. Fame. The kind of life that makes the world look at you and say, “He made it.”

And then he filed for bankruptcy.

That story has always stayed with me because it proves something most people don’t want to admit:

You can be rich and still be broke. 💰

And I have seen smaller versions of this around me.

People making $300K, $500K, sometimes even close to $1M a year. On paper, they look like they have won.

But when you look under the hood, the story changes.

Huge mortgage. Financed cars. Credit cards moving around. Business cash flow stress. Lifestyle that needs the next big month to survive.

That is not wealth.

That is high-income pressure. 😮‍💨

And this is where people confuse the game.

Rich and wealthy are not the same thing.

Rich is what you make. Wealthy is what you keep.

Rich is the income. Wealthy is the ownership.

Rich is the big house. Wealthy is being able to sleep peacefully inside it.

Rich is people thinking you made it. Wealthy is not needing their opinion to feel secure.

Income can lie to you.

It can make you feel ahead while your net worth is barely moving. It can make you upgrade your life faster than you upgrade your assets.

Bigger house. Better car. Better vacations. More convenience. More payments. More pressure. 🧱

And slowly, the money that was supposed to create freedom starts funding a more expensive cage.

This is why investing matters so much. 📈

Not because I want you staring at charts all day. Not because I want you obsessed with money.

But because every dollar you invest is a dollar that can work without you.

It can work while you sleep. It can work while you’re with your kids. It can work while you’re tired. It can work when you don’t feel like producing.

And over time, those invested dollars can start buying back your options.

That is the real goal.

Not looking rich.

Not impressing people.

Not building a life so expensive that you have to keep running forever just to maintain it.

The goal is to make money, keep enough of it, invest it, and let time do the quiet work. 🌱

Because someone making $120K and investing consistently can become wealthier than someone making $500K and spending everything.

The number that matters is not just what comes in.

It is what stays. What grows. What compounds.

And this is where I think a simple rule helps:

Try to invest 20% of what you make.

Not because 20% is a magic number, but because it forces you to stop asking, “How much can I spend?” and start asking, “How much of my income is actually buying my freedom?”

That one shift changes everything.

I made a full video breaking down the 20% investing rule and how to think about it practically (Video link below).

Because wealth is not built by making money once.

It is built by keeping a percentage of your income, investing it consistently, and letting time do the heavy lifting.

So yes, make more money.

Grow your income. Build the business. Ask for the raise. Get better at what you do.

But don’t confuse income with wealth.

Being rich can still leave you trapped.

Being wealthy gives you choices. 🤍

P.S. Hit reply and be honest:

Are you currently building a rich life or a wealthy life?

Just reply with one word:

RICH or WEALTHY

And if you’re brave, tell me what needs to change.
