Do you know Your "I QUIT" Number?

Sunday, 15 March 2026·3 min read· Money

Most people think retirement planning is about stopping work one day.

I see it very differently.

Retirement planning is really about discovering your FIRE number.

Your Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) number is the amount of money where your investments can cover your lifestyle.

At that point, something powerful happens.

You stop working because you have to…
and start working because you want to.

That’s not retirement.

That’s freedom.

What A FIRE Number Actually Looks Like

A simple rule many planners use is the 4% rule.

If your investments can safely withdraw 4% per year, you can sustain your lifestyle without running out of money.

Which means your FIRE number is roughly:

25× your annual expenses.

Examples:

If your lifestyle costs $60,000/year → FIRE number ≈ $1.5M
If your lifestyle costs $80,000/year → FIRE number ≈ $2M
If your lifestyle costs $120,000/year → FIRE number ≈ $3M

Most middle-class families in Canada land somewhere between:

👉 $2M – $3M invested

That’s the zone where work becomes optional.

Not luxury-yacht rich.

But financially free.

The Part People Get Wrong

When people hear about FIRE, they assume the goal is to quit work early.

That’s not the real goal.

The real goal is removing pressure.

When your investments cover your lifestyle:

  • You can work less
  • You can start a business without fear
  • You can choose meaningful work
  • You can take risks

And whatever you earn after that point?

That money is no longer survival money.

It becomes generational wealth.

The Biggest Myth About Wealth

Many people believe financial independence is only possible if you:

  • build a big business
  • flip real estate
  • sell a startup

But that’s simply not true.

You can absolutely reach financial independence on a salary.

Someone investing $1,500–$2,000 per month for 25–30 years in diversified investments can build $2M+ portfolios.

This isn’t motivational talk.

It’s compound interest doing its job.

But most people never sit down and calculate their number.

Without that number, retirement feels like a dream instead of a plan.

Why I Talk About This So Much

After years of helping families buy homes and plan their finances, I’ve noticed something interesting.

Most people know their:

  • mortgage payment
  • car payment
  • grocery budget

But they don’t know the number that determines their financial freedom.

And once you know that number, everything changes.

You stop asking:

"Can I retire someday?"

And start asking:

"How do I get to this number faster?"

That’s when real financial planning begins.

If you’re one of my mortgage clients, this is exactly the kind of long-term planning we go deeper into inside Grow Nation, where we talk about investing, real estate and building toward your FIRE number — and if you’re ever looking for help with a mortgage, you can always book a call here.

The goal was never to stop working.

The goal was always freedom.

And freedom starts with knowing your number. 💰
