The $5M Mistake

Sunday, 8 March 2026·2 min read· Money Mindset

When I say I want to help 1 million immigrants retire with $5M, I often get the same reaction: "That's impossible."

And honestly… I understand why people say that. Because when someone hears $5,000,000, the brain shuts down. 🧠

It feels too far. Too big. Too unrealistic. So people dismiss the idea before they even begin.

But the mistake isn't dreaming big. The mistake is starting big.

When most people think about retirement planning, they jump straight to the finish line. 🏁 They imagine things like investing $10,000/month, buying multiple rental properties, building massive stock portfolios, becoming some kind of financial wizard.

And when they look at their own numbers…
Income: $85,000
Expenses: $82,000
Savings: $0

That $5M goal suddenly feels like it belongs to someone else.

But the truth is far simpler. A $5M retirement plan rarely starts with $10K per month. It often starts with something much smaller.

$500/month. That's $6,000 a year.

Suddenly the question changes. Instead of asking: "How do I build $5 million?" You ask a much better question: "How do I create an extra $6,000 this year?"

That problem is solvable. Maybe it's a small side hustle, negotiating a raise, reducing a few expenses, learning a higher-paying skill.

Once that $500/month becomes normal… It grows. $500 → $1,000 → $2,000. Eventually the goal becomes simple: Invest 20% of your income consistently. Do that for long enough, and the math starts doing the heavy lifting. 📈

This reminds me of someone from my childhood. Outside my school in Delhi, there was a man who sold cholle bhature from a small cart. 🛒 No fancy setup. No marketing. No big ambitions.

His only focus every day was simple: Make the best cholle bhature. Sell everything on the cart. That was the goal. Not becoming a millionaire. Not opening restaurants. Just selling out the cart.

Day after day. Year after year. Eventually the cart became a small shop. 🏪 Then another. Then another. Today he owns multiple shops and several properties.

If you looked at his net worth today, you'd probably call him successful. But he didn't start by thinking about millions. He started by thinking about today's cart.

Most people fail financially because they reverse this process. They think about the $5M lifestyle 💭 But ignore the $500 habit.

Big dreams are powerful. But small actions build them. 🧱
